We had a party of Bell Ringers from Herefordshire stay at the cottages in May.  They used us as a base to tour numerous bell towers in the area.  One of their party was an ex research vet who is notable as being the person who identified BSE in the 1980's.

A devalued £ and chaos again at Heathrow - you have to be patient & rich to holiday abroad

Oh dear, why are we here?

Oh dear, why are we here?

The Times 18th July 2016.  British Airways passengers faced chaotic scenes on one of the busiest days of the year so far as a new computer system caused delays at check-in desks.

Travellers using Britain’s two busiest airports told of “absolutely horrendous” queues just as the summer holiday getaway started for hundreds of thousands of families.

Phillip Schofield, the television presenter, told how he missed his BA flight after waiting more than two hours at Heathrow Terminal 5. He tweeted directly to BA that he was on his way home. He said that there was “not one single member of staff to talk to”, adding: “There’s no announcements, no info when the planes left, no help at all.”

Other passengers at Gatwick told of similar problems.

April 2016.  Swimming Pool refurbishment.

We have closed for a couple of weeks while the roof of our swimming pool is being rebuilt.  We have always kept the water & air temperature of the pool pleasantly warm but the new roof, with the latest standard of insulation, will make this much easier.  The pool re-opens on 29th April.

Do you really want to go abroad for a holiday?

There was a picture in the Times today (23 July 2015) of the crowded beach in Benidorm - apparently tourists are going there to avoid the terrorist threat in the North African resorts. It contrasts dramatically with the peaceful, wide open spaces of North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire is where millionaire Londoners come for their 50th Birthday party (one of the founders of Car Phone Warehouse)

Last weekend,11/12 July '15, a Birthday Party party was held for about 500 people on a shooting estate on the North Yorkshire Moors.  The guests came from London on the Orient Express, were accommodated in luxury tents and caravans, wined, dined & entertained.  Fireworks and then an air display, including a Spitfire, to finish the party.  (Read all about it in Hello Magazine).  Beech Farm Cottages hosted the "workers" who set up the event.

Tour de Yorkshire

Following the astounding success of the Tour de France in Yorkshire last year, the Tour de France organisers organised another major international cycling race in Yorkshire in 2015, the Tour de Yorkshire.  It emphasise what a wonderful place this area of Yorkshire is for cycling, either in the peaceful moors, or on the special cycle tracks and mountain bike tracks in Dalby forest or on the cycle track along the coast built on the old railway line etc. The Tour de Yorkshire returns in 2016 (29 April - 1st May)

(The picture above was taken on Blakey Ridge about a 20mins drive - longer on a bike! - from Beech Farm Cottages).

1940's Weekend in Pickering, October 2014

War Weekend.jpg

Every October Pickering re-creates the atmosphere of the 1940's - but through rose-coloured glasses, forgetting the horrors of the 1940's.  Convoys of period vehicles are in the town and lots of people dress up in authentic 1940's period clothes, civilian and military.  It is well worth seeing.  At the cottages this year we had a fire engine and two cars from the 1930's.

Standing over the precipitous Chimney Bank, reputedly England's steepest public road, looking into Rosedale, the sweep of landscape is as perfect as England can accomplish.  On this moorland edge in the heart of the North York Moors, the vista stretches in the distance along the old road to the North Sea coast.

If you turn left out of Beech Farm Cottages the road takes you up the valley, into the National Park and to Rosedale & Chimney Bank, only a few minutes drive.

German visitors celebrate World Cup success

We had some German visitors during the week Germany won the World Cup.  They left especially happy.

Rooney sets the trend....

Rooney fell off his bike in May & dislocated his elbow - don't cycle with a dog on a lead!  He then had to have an operation on 24th July to repair the damage to his shoulder and had to wear a sling for several weeks during the peak holiday season - Pat was not impressed.  However he seemed to have set a trend because at the Hungarian GP in July Toto Wolff, the Director of the Mercedes F1 Team, along with other members of the team fell off their bikes and also injured themselves and Toto also had his arm in a sling during the season - see picture of Toto below :-
